How to resize a signature for an application form

Important limitations

Worth knowing before you start, so nothing here comes as a surprise at the point you are submitting a form:

Automatic trimming looks for dark pixels on a light background. A signature on coloured, shadowed or patterned paper may be trimmed badly; adjust the threshold or crop it yourself.
This tool does not darken or clean up faint ink. A pale pencil signature stays pale.
Required dimensions vary between forms. Enter what your form asks for.

How your files are handled

This tool does its work using your browser’s own image and document engine. Your file is read from your device into the page’s memory, processed there, and offered back to you as a download. It is never sent to Fyleit, never written to a server, and never stored anywhere we can reach.

You can verify that for yourself: load this page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool still works. That is also why there is no sign-up and no email field — we have nothing to attach an account to.

Common problems

The trim cut off part of my signature.

Lower the trim threshold so fainter strokes count as ink, and increase the padding. Long descenders in light ink are the usual casualty.

It did not trim anything.

The paper is probably too dark or unevenly lit for the ink to stand out. Raise the threshold, or retake the photo in brighter, more even light.

My signature has a grey shadow behind it.

The photo was taken at an angle or under a directional light. Photograph the page flat, with the light source behind you and to the side so your hand does not cast a shadow.

The form says my signature is too small.

Some forms set a minimum as well as a maximum. Increase the output width — around 300 to 600 pixels wide is typical — and compress to the KB limit afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo or signature uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is processed by your own browser, on your own device. Your photograph and signature are never transmitted to us and never stored. That matters here more than on most tools, because these are identity documents.

Is this an official tool?

No. This is an independent utility with no connection to any government department, examination board or recruitment body. It prepares a file to the dimensions and size you enter — it cannot tell you what your particular form requires, and it cannot guarantee the result will be accepted. Always read the instructions on the form itself.

Should the background be white or transparent?

White, unless the form explicitly asks for a transparent PNG. Most forms expect JPG, which cannot store transparency at all.

How do I get a clean signature image without a scanner?

Sign on unlined white paper with a black or dark blue pen. Photograph it from directly above in daylight, away from your own shadow. Then let this tool trim and resize it.
